Gabriela Kulka is a pianist, singer and songwriter, whose repertoir defies stylistic pidgeonholing. Balancing on the verges of rock, jazz and cabaret, she creates dynamic, emotional and complex pieces of music, which bear as much resemblence to stage musical, as to contemporary alternative pop.
She has recorded two full-length albums:
- Between Miss Scylla and a Hard Place (2003),
- Out (2006) [re-released in 2007]
She debuted in 2001 on the warsaw club and cafe circuit, playing piano and performing her first songs - in Jazz Cafe Helicon, Traffic, Jazzgot.
The year 2007 brought her a nomination from National Public Radio Program 3 "...for pursuing her own, original artistic concept". In the same year "Out" was picked by the major Polish weekly 'Polityka' for the annual list of most important cultural events - it took 4th place in popular music category.
The independent magazine 'Lampa' called the album "...one of the greatest, and most overlooked events on the Polish music scene ".
Gabriela recorded the album "Out" on her own - arranging, performing and recording all instrument and vocal parts, combining a cabaret sensitivity, and a sound only causally ornamented with electronics, with ambitious lyrics, both in Polish and in English. This diverse collection of songs is brought together by the common element - the flexible, multi-octave voice of their author.
Alongside her recording work, Gabriela has been playing concerts all around Poland: National Philharmonic House in Warsaw,Tygmont, Teatr Wytwórnia, The Radio 3 Agnieszka Osiecka studio (the show was broadcast live in January 2007), and also in Wroclaw, Cracow, Gdynia, Zielona Gora and Katowice.
In concert she is accompanied by the rock trio Raalya. Numerous times she has also been joined onstage by her father, the violinist Konstanty Kulka.
In September 2007 she debuted in theater, performing the songs written for the controversial monodrama 'Rafalala Show - Fun At Night' at Krystyna Janda's theater 'Polonia'.
Polish daily 'Dziennik' wrote: "Gabriela Kulka coquers the hearts of theater-goers (...) Yesterday's premiere at Polonia Theater has turned many heads, mostly due to the musical side of the show."
Gazeta Wyborcza mentioned "...the fantastic instrumental work of young pianist Gabriela Kulka"
In January 2008 Gabriela performed with the Kalisz Philharmonic Orhcestra - presenting her songs in new, orchestral arrangements.
Polityka - "Pop, jazz and cabaret all in one. Gabriela's unique vocal ability, the perfect feel, and the equally interesting pianistic talent, will move anyone who hears this album" (Miroslaw Peczak)
Twój Styl - "A feminine, avantgarde, ironic artist. A demonic poet, singer and arranger. She does't follow musical cliches, she follows her own path" (Agata Passent)
Sukces - "In the songs she writes, she creates whole worlds; plays with genres, conventions and her own voice".
Pani - "Gabriela's album has been hailed as the revelation of the year, and the ranks of her fans are becoming more and more numerous"
Elle - "It's worth to discover her before everyone else does!"
Polska (the Times) - "It's a musical explosion on an international level"
Independent.pl - "Kulka has created a style of her own, which is very difficult to copy (...) You will return to this album many times"
